Our team, with an educational background in history and pedogogy, offers educational programmes and projects for groups of young people and adults. The main focus of our educational service lies on programmes with a historical-political character, that build a bridge between the past and the present with the aim to encourage tolerance, peace and non-violence. The educational meeting centre is located directly next to the German War Cemetery and is managed by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V (German War Graves Commission).
Our work is based on the guidelines of the Volksbund. Our institution does not pursue economic, political or religious goals and acts in a politically neutral way. The educational work is also supported by the foundation “Vrienden van Ysselsteyn” (Friends of Ysselsteyn).
The visitor centre, which opened in 2021, is the central point of contact for all visitors to the war cemetery. Here you will not only find practical information about visiting the cemetery itself, but you are also in the right place if you have any questions about the war dead who lie here.
The new multimedia exhibition tells the story of the war cemetery and also offers visitors the opportunity to discover the stories behind the crosses for themselves. Using various data visualizations, visitors are given an impressive insight into the special features of this cemetery and thus a unique view out of the German perspective of the Second World War in the Netherlands. In addition, our extensive database can be searched using various filters to discover the deceased and their life stories. Many accessible photos, documents and other personal items are linked to these life stories.
The Visitor Centre also has rooms available for meetings, lectures and presentations, which are mostly used as part of our educational projects.
The exhibition can be visited free of charge 7 days a week from 9:00 to 17:00.
In the visitor centre you will also find a restaurant where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, lunch or dinner after your visit. Here you can reflect in peace and calm. You are very welcome, both indoors and outdoors.
The Friends of Ysselsteyn Foundation was established to advise and financially support the youth and educational work at the Ysselsteyn War Cemetery.
Many projects have already been realised within this context, including the construction of the visitor centre, which will be opened in 2021. If you consider the (educational) work on the War Cemetery Ysselsteyn important, we warmly invite you to become a member of the Friends of Ysselsteyn! For an annual fee of € 50 we will keep you informed about the activities in the educational meeting centre, the visitor centre and the German War Cemetery Ysselsteyn. You will also profit from other advantages, such as networking opportunities during the annual members’ meeting or a guided tour at the War Cemetery for you and your group (up to a maximum of 25 people).
