Maintenance work at the War Cemetery
Maintenance work such as cleaning gravestones, gardening or colouring gravestone inscriptions are usual and practical components of Volksbund youth work. A well-known wisdom says that you can learn a lot about a society by seeing how it takes care of their dead. Thinking about this and also realising that a well-maintained cemetery is not something to be taken for granted, is something the participants experience during their practical work. They become more aware of the individual graves and are confronted with names and dates of life. The time to reflect on what individual personality is hidden behind a simple cross is often described as a valuable experience.
